Sunrise
An impala.
Thursday,
April 20th.
I
was awake before the alarms for the morning drive. We headed out with Paula and
our driver Savon. Great to be out on another beautiful day riding over the
terrain. Today turned out to be a bird day as we didn’t see many animals other
than impala. It's amazing how quickly people get tired of seeing the beautiful impala. The sentiment is expressed as JAFI ... just another f-ing impala. We saw two different species of kingfishers, a lappet-faced vulture and a
Marshall eagle. We were back by 10:30. After lunch we had a short lecture on keystone
species which are the types of species that dominate an environment and if they
were to be removed the environment would change radically. Elephants are like
that as are wolves. Then we had a short boat ride on the river to evacuate the
camp as the nearby mine was going to do a blast. So, we floated across the
river and saw several crocodiles and two hippos, which proves the sign by the
river that states: ‘Trespassers will be eaten!’ After that we had a workshop on
photograph composition which gave me things to think about visa vie framing and
whether it’s better to zoom in on the animal to fill the frame or zoom back a
bit, or a lot, to show the animal in its habitat. Obviously, there are
different times and opportunities for either situation. Then it was time to
edit photos and update the blog before dinner. We went for a night game drive
for two hours at 7:30. It’s always difficult at night to see things and get
photos but it is a different experience and a bit spooky knowing that things
are out there that can hurt you. We saw a spotted eagle owl, a chameleon, a giraffe
and a few impala. Back to the camp by 10 and pretty much straight to bed as we
have an early morning game drive tomorrow.
The spectacular sunrise is the reward for rising at such an early hour. That's one photogenic chameleon, to put a wrap on the day. Very nice.
