Arrived in Ottawa for July 1st, Canada Day. We
were booked in at the University of Ottawa Residences again. The team leaders
arrived first and we met at U of O. There I met up with Lyle, Diane, Simone, Angela,
Deirdre, Dan and the other team leaders. We had a brief meeting. Afterwards we went
out walking to celebrate Canada Day. It was a cool, cloudy, day that degenerated into a
full out thunderstorm. We took cover under the lobby overhang of the Fairmont
Hotel with dozens of others. The water was racing down the road. After it let up we walked
around town through the market area and Sparks Street. There were
lots of people around but there didn't seem to be much to do. We visited
Parliament Hill and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where that tragic shooting
took place last year. There were lots of small Canadian flags placed on the
tomb. After dinner we went to a park near the hill to watch the fireworks. It
was very cold and windy and we were not in the right place to see them over the
Parliament buildings, but they were excellent and lasted about twenty minutes.
After that we walked back to the residence along the canal.
