Friday December 17th. Got up early and set off. Today was another long day of driving to reach our destination as we head towards the Skeleton Coast. We stopped several times for pee/smoke breaks. We stopped in a small town for a break. I wandered around looking at the people. Found two boys and a dog sitting in a “kalahari ferrari”. And a man with a very philosophic t=-shirt.
For lunch we stopped by an deserted farm. We discovered a round building full of goat carcasses. Later we stopped by a deserted social weaver bird colony.
The scenery was beautiful, dry and desolate as we drove along the dirt roads. We saw some ostriches, a baboon troop and a springbok run across the road.
Today I sat with Edward again, this time in the front seat. Better day, he is a sweet man. He is 77 and really enjoying himself. He is full of questions and loves seeing the animals out the windows.
We arrived at our campground, Sesriemvlai about 4:30. Set up camp and then we had time to ourselves. Some of the guys played cricket. I went for a walk around the camp and behind it. I followed a small group of springbok and managed to get some photos as they passed behind a hill and I was able to wait on the other side until they came by.
Back to the camp for dinner. Group meeting and off to bed shortly after, because we are getting up early.
Hey Joe!
ReplyDeleteThere is something I absolutely love about dry deserted places and you are right in the middle of it! Envy!
Your pic of the Springboks almost seems to have a mirage in it? If so, fantastic!
It makes you thirsty just looking at it. I'm with Mike regarding the Springbok picture, it is just amazing.
