Monday December 6th.
I was awoken by the steward trying to serve me breakfast... Malaysian Airlines are terrific. Great service, efficient, and good airplane food.
I had a window seat and was luckily sitting on the correct side of the plane in order to see spectacular views of Capetown and Tabletop Mountain (in the third photo) as we came in for our arrival right on time.
After a quick check through customs I was met by Lou's Capetown co-worker, Gwyneth, who was holding my name on a piece of paper. We had been in touch a few times during my trip and she had graciously agreed to meet me and show me around Capetown a bit. Great to have a local contact. She drove me to my hostel, where I left my stuff and we walked across the street to the Beuno Vista Social Club Cafe for lunch. The place is quite bohemian and set up with a Cuba motif complete with pictures of old cars and musicians.
After our lunch, Gwyneth headed home, about a half hour out of town, and I settled into my hostel. The Atlantic Point Backpackers Hostel is the best I've ever been in. It's run by a young South African named Tim. It's fairly new, very clean, spacious with several common areas and a small bar upstairs with a pool table! This is a five star hostel! Yikes, sure glad I didn't have to type that!
For the rest of the day I wandered around the area finding a laundromat, an ATM, a Woolworths store that sells groceries including great fresh fruit and prepared meals. Bought some supplies and headed back to the room. Then to bed on something comfortable that did not move! Oh yeah, check the photo and the name of the hostel next door! Too funny.
Welcome to South Africa! I know you are going to have a wonderful time there. FYI, it's Table Mountain...beautiful picture from the sky. Glad this hostel is nice for a change. Enjoy your days in Cape Town: Lucky you!
