Monday, November 18th.
We had a leisurely breakfast and
then packed up. We were picked up by a large coach, for only the two of us! The
airport was small and modern and the wait passed quite quickly. The flight was
all of an hour and we arrived in El Calafate by 1:00. We were picked up and
transported to a very large upscale hotel, the Alto Calafate, on top of a hill
overlooking the town. The view was amazing out over the town to the snow-capped
Andes. We checked in and since the weather was quite warm and sunny, we took
advantage of the hotel shuttle for the 10-minute drive into town wearing just a
t-shirt. We walked up and down the high street before deciding on a nice
restaurant where we had a late lunch of guanaco steak (an animal closely
related to the llama) and grilled vegetables and a large Patagonia beer. Then
we walked around a bit more, found a café for a coffee while waiting for the
shuttle back to our room.
We both made use of the great 25
metre pool here and then went to the hotel bar for a beer before turning in
early in anticipation of tomorrow.
