Thursday November 11.
Eric and Anushka left today. I took the scooter again and rode west to the other end of the island to visit Orongo Village which is the other part of the park with the admission. The village is perched on the edge of a caldera with a spectacular view of a couple of small islands (Moto Nui and Moto Iti) just off shore. The village was used as a gathering place for members of all the tribes when they came together to compete in the birdman contests. The houses are very basic one or two room places with only a door as an opening and made of flat rocks quarried from the volcano.
After that I rode to Akivi in the centre of the island to see a set of seven moais. The road was terrible, dirt and bumpy and it rained a bit. Then back to town to snoop around there and mail some postcards.
It rained off and on the rest of the afternoon, so I hung around town and didn´t go back to the beach.
In the evening I went to see a live Polynesean music and dance show called Matato´a. It was great. There were six female dancers, who swayed around Hawaiin style, but the four male dancers were amazing, very athletic and intense.
Then back to Martin´s house to sleep.
Hey look at those drummers!
