Colombo Day 1

The first of many temples we will see in the coming weeks.

A local old train with no pollution controls.
The old falling apart part of the city, in amongst the new growing city.

First mosque too.
In a tuk tuk. About 10 kms for $2.
John at the Hilton restaurant.
Modern construction with proper scaffolding.

Friday, February 2nd.
I spent the morning trying to get caught up on the blog and trying to Skype Denise, but she couldn’t hear me either. So I tried to sort that out with no luck.
John and I went for a long walk in the afternoon to have lunch at the Hilton Hotel which had been recommended to us by Eduardo. It was a long walk along the noisy, crowded street. We cut over a couple of blocks to walk along by the sea, but that wasn’t much better. The shoreline was all rocks and between us and the water were two railway lines. Plus, the road had no sidewalks to speak of and the cars and horns were omnipresent. When we got to where we thought it was, we asked a policeman and found it was another 2 kilometres, so we hailed a tuk tuk and and got driven there, for $2.
We had a nice Italian meal sitting by the pool and a beer. It was more expensive but still very reasonable. Then we hired a tuk tuk for the ride back and went for a little dip in the hotel pool, which is actually very nice and clean.
In the evening we went to the bar attached to the hotel, the Yellow Sapphire Room and had a couple of beer and some chips in a room with no other tourists, just locals. Then we headed off to bed.
