Tuesday, April 8th.
Today was another long day of music. I went to the Q&A for Swedish band Moon Safari who I wanted to learn a little about as I liked their set. I stayed to hear the Q&A for Rick Wakeman. Then I went to the Photo Experience for Haken, Riverside, Gazpacho and Thank You Scientist who were very crazy and mauled me for the photo. After lunch I went to the Aristocrats Q&A. I asked the band about the fact that all of Steven Wilson’s solo band members are on board and if they had any comment about that. Guthrie said that Steven Wilson would never attend such an event but all the other band members enjoy the experience of meeting and playing with other bands. Marco Minneman commented on the naughty song titles on their first album that earned them a parental advisory sticker for an instrumental album. Later I talked to Gregory Spawton of BBT as I’d heard that he was a huge XTC fan and he said yes he loves the later period and says Nonsuch is one of his 5 favourites albums of all time. Then I met Marco who talked about working with Steven Wilson on the Raven Who Refused to Sing album which he says has a great sound. Then I talked to Guthrie too who was under the weather with inner ear problems and since they'd just finished an Australia and Asian tour and he was exhausted. Standing there also was Randy McStine so I had a chance to mention to him that DMJ when asked about finding a Neil Young addition to the CSN act Morse said 'Randy McStine'. He really gets around. Then Mark and watched the DMJ set at the Pool Deck. They are a fun band with three like minded musicians from different bands recreating the sound of CSN. They played an excellent set and brought in Alberto Bravin from BBT to sing with them. They ended with Suite Judy Blue Eyes. It clouded over, got windier and started to rain right after they ended. I talked to a guy about the Progressive Nation cruise, cause I was wearing the shirt; and I saw another guy with a Cyberium bag and talked to him about that band who I'd seen in Toronto. He was from Buffalo and came up to Toronto to see that show with Riverside. Then I saw a guy wearing a 'Titties and Beer' t-shirt and I asked if he was on the Progressive Nation at Sea Cruise as I'd recognized the shirt and he said he was. I said I had a picture of him from then. He got excited and gave me his e-mail. He lives in Kitchener. I'll send him the photo when I get back. Then we met and caught up with the two young guys we talked to the other night and took photos together. I met another young American at the back of the ship and talked to him about the wake of the ship and he apologized to me about American politics (several others had done that too). I had him take a photo of Mark and I. I saw Marius Duda of Riverside getting a coffee and asked for a photo. I talked to him about the hiatus, Lunatic Soul and the concert. I saw Robert from Beardfish and complimented him on the concert. He was very happy to hear that I enjoyed it. We watched a bit of the Begg Sisters at the Atrium. They are Nick Beggs and his daughters who play coffee shop type music, with the girls on acoustic guitars, and Nick on stand up bass. I went to see Big Big Train Stardust Theater and found that the Titties and Beer guy was sitting right beside us! How weird. I wanted to like BBT and hoped that live would do it for me, but they left we cold. I was not sure where the journey was or the point. They are all very talented and all play multiple instruments and sing, much like GG without the excitement. I did enjoy watching Rickard and wondered what he gets out of it and if he prefers it to Beardfish. Nick was good too, but I think Marco and Greg are better drummers. That ended the musical extravaganza of The of the Cruise to the Edge 2025… next year?… maybe who knows... it'll depend on American politics and the lineup of bands, but Mark is interested, so we'll see.
Back to the room by 11:30 to pack.
