In my little home.
Feeding time.
The group for the first half of the trip. Ten people are leaving.
Here you can see the long dry stretch of the falls, because of the dry season.
Spectacular views.
You can see the rafting route in the gorges to the left.
The long island on the upper Zambezi River.
Sunday, October 15th.
This camp is called Camp
Restful, but it wasn't last night, there were trains passing close
by, a few drunk people singing along the street across from our camp,
traffic noise and then before sunrise a garbage truck driving through
the camp emptying garbage bins.
We got up for a six
o'clock breakfast and a last group photo before the rafters set off at
seven. Seven of us opted for the helicopter flight. I was signed up
for the longer flight and it was amazing. I like to fly in a
helicopter and to fly over something as beautiful as this was
excellent. The only downside was that it was the dry season and that
there was not as much water and the spray that gives the falls there
nickname: the smoke that thunders, was visible to a lesser extent.
However, I enjoyed the ride and it included both a trip around the
falls and then up the Zambezi River through the national park where I
could see cape buffalo, antelope, hippos and elephants from the air.
We all got back to the
camp by 10:30 and then spent the rest of the morning saying goodbyes
to people who are leaving. Then Will, Maria, Che-wei, Karin and I went
to the cafe across the street for non alcoholic drinks and lunch. I
had a bottle of water, a glass of fresh sqeezed orange juice, a
sprite and a second bottle of water. It was 40 degrees and the thirst
would not abate.
Later I came back to camp
and cooled off in the pool before catching up on photos and the blog.
I finished up about six and headed back to the tents just in time to
meet Timon who was greeting the new arrivals. We have two middle age
men from England, two young women from Australia and a man from the
US. Two people are missing. But I still have my own tent happily.
After the meeting nine
of us went to the Three Monkeys Restaurant which Will had read about
on the internet. It was a bit like Carnivores in Nairobi. They served
a skewer of three meats, beef, kudu and impala. A lot of people tried
that. I had beef, impala and crocodile sliders. We had a few beer and
a good yack before heading back to the tents about ten.
Victoria Falls maybe dry but the falls on the north shore of Ahmic certainly aren't..... wow, it's a welly season! Great pictures Joe. Chris and I went swimming Oct.14th. Tradition!! Megan. xoxo
