Singing Songs

Here are a couple of songs that Joel taught the kids during singing time. I've posted them because I thought they were interesting and challenging for the kids. The first one is an aboriginal protest song, about the worthless treaties that the white men made them sign. It has an aboriginal chorus that the kids managed to learn to sing reasonably well. The second song is the old classic "I've Been Everywhere Man" song but this time with Aussie names. Again very challenging for the kids, especially because it is fast.

Treaty - Yothu Yindi
Well I heard it on the radio
And I saw it on the television
Back in 1988
All those talking politicians
Words are easy, words are cheap
Much cheaper than our priceless land
But promises can disappear
Just like writing in the sand
Treaty Yeah Treaty Now
Treaty Yeah Treaty Now

Nhima Djatpangarri nhima walangwalang -
Nhe Djatpayatpa nhima gaya nhe-
Matjini.... Yakarray - nhe Djat'pa nhe walang - Gumurrtijararrk Gutjuk

This land was never given up
This land was never bought and sold
The planting of the Union Jack
Never changed our law at all
Now two rivers run their course
Separated for so long
I'm dreaming of a brighter day
When the waters will be one
Treaty Yeah Treaty Now Treaty Yeah Treaty Now
Treaty Yeah Treaty Now Treaty Yeah Traty Now

Nhima djatpa nhe walang
gumurrtjararrk yawirriny Nhe gaya nhe matjini
Gaya nhe matjini Gaya gaya nhe gaya nhe
Matjini walangwalang Nhema djatpa nhe walang - Nhe gumurrtjarrk nhe ya

Promises - Disappear - Priceless land - Destiny -
Well I heard it on the Radio - And I saw it on the Television
But promises can be broken Just like writing in the sand
Treaty Yeah
Treaty Now ....

I've Been Everywhere Man - Geoff Mack/Lucky Starr
Here is a You Tube address to watch a video and hear how fast it is sung!

This song was written by Geoff Mack in 1959 and recorded by Australian Lucky Starr and Canadian  Hank Snow (bothin 1962). Snow's version has a list of North American places rather than the original Australian ones. Both videos are fun to watch.

The video actually starts with this introductory verse that the kids didn't learn.:

Well, I was humpin' my bluey on the dusty Oodnadatta road,
When along came a semi with a high and canvas-covered load.
(Spoken) "If you're goin' to Oodnadatta, mate, um, with me you can ride."
So I climbed in the cabin and I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand,
I said "Listen, mate, I've travelled ev'ry road in this here land."

Cos "I've been everywhere, man,
I've been everywhere, man.
'Cross the deserts bare, man;
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been ev'rywhere.
